How do you define Professionalism = Attitude!

Posted on 03 February 2010

Professionalism is a number of things.  It is an attitude.    It is the way you communicate. It is the way you work. It is the way you view yourself and the people you work with. It is the way you do business.    First and foremost, however, professionalism is an attitude.

As a professional your attitude affects your whole world view.  You:

  • don’t take “unimportant” details for granted
  • care about how you are perceived by your peers and associates
  • know your attitude will affect others’ attitude towards you and your work
  • know it will affect the way you approach anything you want to accomplish

As a professional, you will understand that communication is an extremely important part of your work.  You understand:

  • that communication occurs on more than one level– body language, dress and deportment
  • that your verbal communication tells people about your education, background and your attitude toward your work.

As a professional you know:

  • that any task requires proper preparation
  • that while you are doing the work you must be alert for substandard results
  • that finishing the job properly is just as important as the preparation and execution
  • that you are the one responsible for the quality of the work done, whether it is done by you or a subordinate

As a professional you:

  • take responsibility for your mistakes and don’t make excuses
  • accept that errors occur and the best way to handle them is to admit them and learn from them
  • that your success depends on your ability to be honest with yourself

As a professional you know:

  • that honesty is very important to a work ethic
  • this ethic will inform your business dealings
  • honesty and forthrightness will have a positive affect on your associates
  • your ethic will reassure people of you wanting what is best for all involved in any business dealing

Being a professional is not a simple thing, but it not difficult either.  As you work on your professional attitude, it becomes easier and easier, until it’s automatic.  In the end, you know that a professional attitude just makes the job simpler and a lot more fun.
