How to keep your small business going when it gets tough.

Posted on 15 February 2010

When the going gets tough the tough get going! What do you do? What keeps your small business going?  You have one quality that will always see you though your small business problems. It’s called “Passion”.

You might ask: “Say what? PASSION? That’s what I feel for my spouse or my favorite sport.  How can it possibly have anything to do with business?” Well, it’s simple. If you are passionate about what you do, when it gets tough, you plow through. I know, I know, that sounds too simple to be the answer. Hear me out.

For those of you who have children, or those of you who are children, (that includes everyone), what would you do if your parent or your child was in trouble? The answer is simple; WHATEVER IT TAKES!  For most small business owners your business is just like a child. You birthed the idea, you nurtured it and you helped it grow.

Many small business owners are as passionate about their business as a mother bear is with her cubs.  So, when you are struggling because the economy slides, new competitors steal your customers, or you loose some key employees, just remember – your passion built this business and it will keep it going and growing.

Find your Passion!

Have you lost your passion? Where did it go?  Good news! It never left. It’s just covered up by frustration, fear and bad news.  Deep down inside, that same feeling you had when you started your business is still there. You just need to reconnect.

Take some time to remember what you felt like when you got that first big deal. Wow, wasn’t that something!  How about when your accountant told you that you should pay yourself a dividend from your profit.  How about the fifth anniversary of your incorporation date, how elated you were when you realized that all those start up headaches were gone.

Keep it growing

Go and meet with some of your customers. Let them remind you of the value you provide!  Keep the faith. Keep living your dream. Do what it takes to make your business grow!

On your team,

Mark
