Why did you come to work today in your small business?

Posted on 19 July 2010

Yes I am really asking, why are you here today?  Did you come in because you need to make money? Maybe you want to smash the competition? How about, just because this is what you do……..?

OK, I’ll get to it.  If you don’t know why you are in business, then you should not be. When disaster hits, or the water gets to deep, you will duck and cover or run for the hills.  Unless….. you know why!

This is not a philosophy blog, it’s a business blog.  Its why is simple, “to be a guide for small business that leads them to a better relationship with their accountant”.  “To lead you… Mr or Ms small business entrepreneur to greater profits through relationship and knowledge.”

So now it’s your turn, why are you here.  No, not what do you do, or why are you better or how much money can you make, WHY.

The difference between a good business and a great one is that both the customer and the employee know why they are interacting in a transaction.  Everyone is clear why they are here and the benefits become obvious.

Everyone knows Volvo means a safe car, somewhere, someone decided that making the passenger safe from accident was important.  So when you think safety you think Volvo.  How about quality, do you think of Ford or Toyota? Well where I live it’s pretty clear.  My mechanic says to me “if you want less repair bills, buy a Toyota”.  Is he crazy? no just honest.

You need to know your why just as much as you need to know your What and How.  In previous blogs I mentioned unique selling propositions and positioning statements.  They must have the Why attached or they are meaningless.  People can be manipulated into buying the What and the How but if you really want a true customer, tell them the Why.

Vision statements, do you have one? I know, they are pas-say, dime a dozen, most of them are cheesy slogans that are poor representations of the business that uses them. But, and I mean a Big But, they are why you come to work.  They may change, they may grow, they always remind you, your customer and your employee, why they get out of bed in the morning.

Your “Why” is what attracts customers and employees, faster than any marketing campaign.

Why on Earth are You Here?

For example, Clydesdale Services is one of the few businesses that we recommend on this site. Why? because they are clear about why they are here: “To Strengthen Your Business”. How do they do that? “By combining their strength with yours to pull more!” And that’s why they are “Clydesdale” Every member of the Clydesdale team is clear, their purpose is to help small business entrepreneurs grow their business.

Now go and get your Why!  Come back and share it here, post your why in the comments, add your web address and I promise not to delete your comment. Just make sure you say Why!

Go ahead declare yourself to the world!

On your team,

Mark
